Surfing/Body boarding/Banana Boat



Just before you reach the walls of Peniche town centre, on the right hand side along the main road following signs for ‘Centro’ there are wooden steps up to the boardwalk and over the sand dunes to get to the beach. There is a beach bar that gives lessons on surfing, Peniche Kite Surf Centre – Lessons: Surf/Body board/Kite surf and Rent: Surfboards/Wetsuits/Kayaks. The staff at Praia d’El Rey (English resort) take the children here at Peniche and also to Baleal to teach them to body board or surf. There are many water activities at Baleal including a banana boat – not for the faint hearted!

Baleal Surf Camp is great value for surfing lessons and hire - a board and wetsuit for a week is 110.00 euros. Call Bruno on +351 969 050 546 - he speaks good English!

Peniche Surf Camp is the place to go for professional surf lessons. A week course of two 2-hour sessions a day will cost around €175.00, surf material included. Call Fernando Mendes on +351 96 233 62 95 - he also peaks good English!

Dive, Dive, Dive....Pedro Oliveira and José Alberto run Haliotis, a diving company based at the Praia Norte Hotel near Peniche. They are both PADI qualified instructors and they started the business in 2004 so all the equipment and the superb twin outboard dive boat are in excellent condition. Pedro and José use the large indoor and outdoor pools at the Hotel Praia Norte for training and instruction. Dives at sea take place in the clear Atlantic waters off Berlenga Island.

Boat-Trips

There are many boat trips to choose from at the ports of Peniche and Lisbon ranging from trips to the Berlenga Islands and the Azores. It is a 40 minute boat ride to the island of Berlengas, a National Nature Reserve.

Golf at Praia d’El Rey is approximately 30 minutes away from Foz de Arelho together with Rio Maior, Golden Eagle (Quinta do Brinçal), Vimerior, Campo Real and a number of other smaller courses.

Wine tasting/Vineyards/Port

We are less than 30 minutes from the main wine caves and vineyards in the region.

Porto - Port Lodges/Tours etc.

Head to Museu do Vinho do Porto, Rua do Monchique 45-52 (entry £1.35) which provides history of port and how it has affected the region's history.  Then visit Vinologia, Rua de Sao Joao 46, a sort of wine/port bar where the staff are informative and can offer advice. 

Then cross the double-decker Dom Luis 1 bridge into Vila Nova de Gaia, which is the port-lodge capital.  There are more than 60 lodges/warehouses and 20 of them offer tours and tasting. 

There is a minibus that runs free from the riverfront to the hilltop port lodge of Graham's Port.  There are fantastic views and free tasting.

Then walk down the hill back to the river and vist the Real Companhia Velha http://www.realcompanhiavelha.pt/ with cellars that part-occupy a four mile railway tunnel, the family-owned Barros Lodge and Calem Lodge.  The Sandeman tours are led by suitably cape-twirling black-hatted students.

Just to make you aware, the majority of port houses are closed on Saturdays.  Lunch at Taylors Port Lodge at the top of the hill with fantastic views is an event you will always remember.
